Did you buy it? Get the job first, then write an article.

New york is a place where anything can happen and usually does. You never know quite what twists you will find, where you find them and when. I recently happened upon an out-of-the-ordinary ordinary-for-manhattan experience when I was leaving Odd Job at 48th and 8the Avenue around closing time. Amongst all of the other low cost discount goodies, I noticed what I thought was a store computer used for inventory. I walked nearer and saw it was a computer demo unit for sale. On the papers near the unit they said it was a refurbished 166-200 mhz name brand computer with 64mb, 2 Gig drive, with cdrom and software for 150 dollars. (17" monitor 150 dollars extra). I thought it sounded about right for a bargin basement store to sell a basic computer. no big deal. They sell dicounted microsoft product and cheap cdroms also. Until I saw on the crt an Icon amongst the many with the label 'xchat'. As any penguin-minded person know, 'xchat' is not from redmond. I was seeing a l! inux computer with KDE pre-installed in the last place I'd think to find it. The clerks didn't know too much about the computer but knew linux was free. The literature near it said some things about the pre-installed software.
At this point I am contacting Odd job to see what their take is on this. I will hopefully make a journal article on this.
NYLXS could do many things with this opportunity. Fix their crappy web site, Help partner with them to sell their computer and promote linux, offer lessons for using linux for manhattan customers, help their business costs by adding linux to their enterprise. As they are not a major congolmerate it is more possible then say walmart and their os-free pc. This could be slashdot-worthy news :-O
Any comment, questions? -Kev
