All free OSes are Unix-compatible. And almost all Free Software will run on any Unix with no problem. Free software is written to the Unix API, because that's what the free OSes implement. This is not an accident, of course. Free software's foothold was in providing a superior toolset to users of commercial Unix systems. Essentially, free software (written to free OS Unix-compatible APIs) ends up being Unix software, so free software is provided to the Unix community.
Windows users can join the Unix community by installing Cygwin or U/WIN on their machines, and thus implementing the Unix API.
