SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] StarOffice to eat MS share (probably)
|
I hope no one on hangout uses Gartner Group for advice. Check out the following: "Sun Microsystems Inc's StarOffice office applications suite is expected to wrest a 10% market share of the desktop productivity software sector away from Microsoft by 2004."
Article located here: http://www.theregus.com/content/23/24864.html
Gartner Group just doesn't get it. Nor do the schools that are not offering Linux based classes or tracks. If you know anything about Linux, and the momentum behind it, especially outside the U.S., 10% in 2004 is similar to the brokerages maintaining buy ratings on Enron and Global Crossing while the companies imploded.
Here's my prediction: StarOffice/Openoffice or other non-MS office suite 25% by 2004 in U.S., and 50%+ outside U.S.
Second prediction: Sell the kitchen sink, and buy Red Hat. And keep buying. Now. (I don't own any, and have been out of the market since '96). Red Hat is going to shock Wall Street on growth within the next four quarters, and it will only get better after that.
Third prediction: within the next four quarters, an analyst or reporter will realize that MS sales of operating systems and office suites is no longer growing, and is actually going to shrink, or has already started shrinking. They will also realize that MS is effectively being shut out of foreign markets due to open source software. This will cause a massive drop in MS stock price. Look for record volume selling.
Fourth prediction: Unless the U.S. wakes the hell up, we will become a third world nation in regards to software development. With all of the other nations developing and implementing open source, they will put in the necessary resources to teach open source in their schools. This will be the beginning of the end for the U.S. software industry unless we wake up quickly.
