Hello, Japhy. It's great to hear your enthusiasm.
There are a number of ways in which you could help.
First off, make sure you sign up for our NYLXS-hangout mailing list at http://www.mrbrklyn.com/appl/nylinux/mail/ This is where we discuss all business.
Second, I'll be having a Free Software Institute meeting in the next couple of weeks. I'll announce it on the hangout list. Let me know what times are good for you and I'll plan it arround your schedule. (We generally have our meetings weeknights.) We can talk more there. The latest calendar of classes (in gnomecal format is available here http://sangretoro.net/documents/gnome.cal )
We need as much publicity as we can get. It's hard to publicize classes to the right people if they are outside of our immediate circle. So forwarding our emails to your lists and telling friends and coworkers is very helpful.
We're going to be needing teachers in about a month or two for the end of June. We were hoping that all of our future teachers would be graduates of our program. But we have yet to see how this would play out. I'll keep you informed if we do need more teachers.
Space is our biggest concern right now. Our ability to teach as many classes as we would like is only limited by classroom space right now. We are in negotiations to gain some temporary and eventually long-term real-estate. In the meantime, we are working with donations of conference rooms for about 5 hours one weekday evening. If you have any leads, they'd be much appreciated.
Technical articles for the Journal are also welcome. We are working at making the first GNU/Linux user's technical journal. Our current version is available here. The deadline for next issue is the end of May. http://www.nylxs.com/journal
Perhaps the two most important things coming up:
On may 24th we are having a demonstration of GNU/Linux small business solutions at CUNY Graduate Center. We have a number of people showcasing things like servers, telephony programs, productivity suites, etc. If you think you can help, send a message to the list. We also need to publicize this among small business contacts.
We are also developing a continuing education program for high school teachers to teach them the importance of Free Softwere in high school education. Particularly, we want to work with them to extend computer education beyond writing Word documents and PowerPoint presentations, and teaching students about computers in a more productive way. We would like to show them that using Free SOftware, we can develop a curriculum teach students about computers in a way that is both accessible and that teaches them about how the computer works. Skills that we believe will be worth more for a longer period of time than software that will be obsolete by the time the children leave school.
So, a lot of things, a lot of ways to help depending on you skills and inclinations. I'd love to see you come on board with us, Japhy. Let me know what you'd like to work with. Thanks for getting ahold of me and I hope to see you soon.
