Yeah...(exhale)
Here I am ready to commit more fisical suicide for the cause...
When is the conference in DC?
OK - this is how it should be done, IMO, and it's not easy and we can help you. It will take serious work.
First, we need Nick Kolovos's telephone number and to set up an appointment to talk to him, and NYFAIRUSE will go to Washington to present your case to him. Generally, we need about 2 weeks notice to make a trip to DC, although I'd be willing to use our funds to go down in person.
What you need to do is organize, like never before. You need a three prong attach within the district.
First, you need to broaden the issue to include the impact on Libraries, Education and Consumer rights. Then you need to right up a pamphlet and flyer targeting the local constituency on the issue, and right up a petition. Then you need to pamphlet the supermarkets, electronic shops and libraires, WHILE simutanously going door to door with petitions and buttons.
Once your mobilized, your looking for volunteers, voters, and new leadership people to tackle this issue from outside your organization. Talk to librarian, university professors, and small business people affected negitively by this legistlation. YOU MUST DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO MOBILIZE VOTES (caps for emphaisi not yelling :) )
Then you meet every week and do it again. Your group needs to think about possibly running someone for office against the encumbant which will be backed by your developing organizaiton.
Once you have the petitions, then you go to Washington with them, or we can go in Proxy for you. It won't take long for you to start having an ear in that office.
We targeted Anthony Weiner because he's in that subcommittee along with Boucher.
The next phase, and this is where we are at now in NYC, is to now find the Congressmans speaking schedule, and place people in the audience, everywhere he goes, no matter the venue, and hammer on this issue in the Q/A session. You people need to seem to be everywhere, while working with the Legislative staff to work with Weiners office and Bouchers staff to force a turn around on the agenda of these issues.
When they work with you, offer to have your people work for him at election time. You want to make the Congressman a stakeholder on the issue.
Tell him that expect to be informed on hearing so that we can get people down to DC and represent us.
ANd then we need to also develope a Fair Use group in DC who will work with us.
AND FINALLY - we need a constant source for funding. We are trying to do it through our educational program and speaking fees.
Richard Stallman is looking to establish a beach head in DC. NYLXS and NY Fair Use, as I designed them, were designed to be franchised. I'm hoping to help the FSF to do this in DC.
You have to be like Tammany Hall, without the graft.
See the Path From Here article on NYLXS, and for god sakes, have DOc publish the Ten Reasons article. It's better than his 13 points for a Lobby. I agree we need a lobby, but ALL POLITICS are LOCAL POLITICS, and everything needs to start at home.
If you want, I'm willing to fly out to California and speak at your LUG
Talk to Lamar Robertson at 1-202-226-7248. He has contacts. I would prefer to target Weiner so that we can get two voices protecting us in the subcommitteee in the house, and then others will come to our side since - hey we are f*cken right and they are G*d Damn WRONG. I would love to be able to have 100 people come in nationwide to either relect him, or campain against him, if he doesn't do the right thing, so that we can really have huge impact on the streets of his district. And then we can turn the same organization around on other local Congressional people. We should be a make or break force in any district.
