Thanks for all the input. Seems the problem was in the ownership and
group permissions. The rpm (or me???) set ownership and group to root
where it needed to be mysql. By doing chown -R mysql.mysql
/var/lib/mysql solved all the problems and I have a MySQL server
running on the laptop.
On to Apache next.
