A lot of people probably don't want to even consider using Linux because it
is something they know nothing about. One way to get past that hurdle is
to get Linux into the hands of the people who make the decisions.
Maybe it would be possible to work with the Non-Profit computer supply
place in order to get Linux onto computers which could then be donated to
these decision makers. I am fairly certain that once someone uses a Linux
desktop or laptop they will realize that it is not a scary proposition and
that training isn't such a big issue. Even getting a sub $1000 laptop from
eBay would probably be worth the expense if you could get it into the hands
of a key decision maker in control of hundreds if not thousands of desktop
stations.
It is hard, if not impossible, for someone to make a decision to go with
Linux when they have never used or even seen Linux. We should find a way
for them to use Linux and maybe even train them first. We might consider
working very hard at selling our Intro to Linux class to key IT decision
makers. That would be good because then they could buy their own $500
machine. :)
