SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] LinuxWorld Expo: General info
|
Once a year, the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo (LWE or LWCE) comes to the Javits Center. This year, Expo will be in New York from January 29th to February 1st.
Conferences start on January 29th.
The Expo floor opens on January 30th, from 10:30am to 6:00pm, except Friday, when the show closes at 4pm.
Registration opens no later than 8:45am, and 8am on Monday.
The expo management makes available to the Linux/Free Software community booths from which we may promote our groups, ideas, and causes. This year, we are fortunate to have booths for the following local groups:
NYLUG LXNY NYLXS
In addition, there is a multi-group booth where who you see will depend much upon when you go there. Local groups as well as groups from out of town will be participating there. (drop a note if you want to exhibit in the multi-group booth, ron-at-vnetworx.net)
Although many vendors of Free Software/Linux/Open Source products have been battered a bit over the last two years, our community, _your_ community, is alive, well, and in fact, thriving. It would be a great thing if we came out in a show of force and make the Expo our own. I fully expect we will indeed leave our mark on this Expo.
Volunteers will be needed for the following:
Set up (Jan 29, before the expo) Booth duty (Jan 30 - Feb 2) Break down (Feb 2 at 4pm _sharp_)
Gear! (*see below)
_Nothing_ is worse than an empty booth! Continuous coverage is a must for the credibility of your favorite groups. Volunteers do NOT need to be experts, or technical. The only thing a volunteer needs to bring is their enthusiasm.
This year we hope to ensure optimal volunteer coverage by using a new volunteer signup/scheduling application. The links to volunteer will be posted here shortly. If for some reason the Web application cannot be used, please drop Joe Grastara mail (joeg-at-mrbrklyn.com) to volunteer.
The show presents an annual opportunity to actually speak to vendors, touch hardware, play with new technologies, and learn about the many groups and organizations that make the community such a rich and rewarding one to participate in. There are also BoF (Birds of Feather) meetings and vendor-sponsored after-hours events.
Free Passes: *FREE* passes to the show are still available! On-line registration is still available as of this moment (approx. 3am Friday)
On-line registration is best if it works with your browser. (it does _not_ work in all browsers) This will speed your entry to the Expo. If you cannot use the on-line registration, you can print out a pass here:
http://www.nylug.org/linuxworld/free_exhibits_promo.pdf
In addition, we expect to have a pile of paper passes available shortly.
You need a regular attendee badge, even if you volunteer to work the booth. Please note also that the Expo will likely be enforcing the same pseudo-security measures common in NY these days. Bring photo-ID. Bring as little as possible with you to the show. Given how much stuff one leaves the expo with, you shouldn't bring much with you regardless. And on a personal note, it was _hot_ in there last year (imo). I had to take my sweater off.

-- * NOTE: "Gear volunteering" means you have stuff to lend if the booth needs it. Last year we got to the booth and discovered we had no power supply for our hub. Two volunteers brought us a hub to get the booth in operation. Please note that we cannot guarantee the safety of any gear you bring to the booth. Nothing was stolen last year, and the show provides perimeter security, but the possibility remains that something could get stolen.
