NYLXS at http://www.nylxs.com does offer a good program.
We just ahd an intro to Perl class, and now the advanced class is
probibly going to startup in February as the teaching space comes on
line.
NYLXS charges about $200-$300 a class, and we're having good turn
outs with good results. Unlike a lot of other programs, we ACTUALLY
teach perl, rather than dumping it on folks.
BTW - I taught at the New School and Queens College. Both those
programs are focusing on CGI programing, which is, IMO, not a
good thing for beginer students. The go into the classes without
even understanding what a variable or STDIN and STDOUT is.
They end up being largely cook book seminars.
Alot of the folks I've instructed are now working with Perl daily.
They are working everywhere from the Nations Science Academy,
financials to webmonkey dot coms.
I also teach as part of Brooklyn Linux Solutions, here in Brooklyn, and we do corperate
training.
I'd like to get a beginning Perl class launched here in Brooklyn. It's a good location,
in a relaxed atmoshere. People do well, and drink coffee while working on their projects.
Intro to Perl 1 starts from assuming you know NOTHING, never programmed before,
and leads to a confident understanding of Object Oriented Perl.
Perl2 starts with a review of OO Perl, closures, and expands on that. It looks at
Perl Modules, DBI and database connectivity, TIE, CGI Programming, modperl,
and finally embperl. I might add mason to it eventually.
Students finish by creating a really decent Calendering programing for the web and
the rest of the world (since it's OO Library based). We emphaisis the reusability of code,
POD, and overall project and programming design.
