SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] The Digital Divide
|
There is an interesting article in this months National Geographic about the rapid pace of the wiring of the third world and the affect of advanced communications on national economies. It has a sister piece about Silicon Valley. I don't beleive it is on-line. For people up to date on this issue there is not a whole lot new on this, but I think we should formulate a letter to National Geographic on this topic.
John 'Mad Dog" Hall frequently speaks about the power of Free Software on the opening third world. I often refer to fair use issues surrounding digital information as criticle to education and reversing the digital divid, and even the non-digitial divide, within our disenfranchised inner cities and among minorities.
This article clearly shows how vital communication infalstructure is to the maturing and democractization of societies the world over. But with the growing attacks on fair use in the digital media, everything, including Free Software is threatened. Linux can be a lynchpin for world empowerment and peace. Or it can be the canary in the coal mine, it's death the first sign of a silent building of a deadly and poisonous atmosphere. While the world is becoming increasingly interconnected at an astonishing rate, Free Software is the only viable means to assure it's use by the people, for the people, so that Democracy does not perish from the earth. (FAIR USE).
