If you want to use XFree86 v4.1 the install routine that the xfree guys themselves have released is pretty good.
Look at the Install and README files here:
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.1.0
You essentially download a bunch of binaries for your architecture, in tarballs, and run their customer config/install script.
I don't know why they don't use autoconf/automake etc.
