I was working part-time as a full-rate consultant in college, and I was
indeed awash in cash. That was hardly the norm, most of my friends at
college didn't have a pot to piss in. One was living on a $5 weekly
"allowance" from his parents. Another used to buy 35 cents worth of gas
for his car to get to work.
If you have to paint college kids with the same brush, paint them as
broke, not as having any meaningful disposable income.
Have you considered making a distinction between full-time college
students and part-time students? The part-timers are more likely to
have "real" jobs with real paychecks.
Even better... how about a means-test? Since the issue here is about
money, then make the distinction about money. Any kid who's applied for
(college) aid should be able to flash that same paperwork to the NYLXS
membership committee to establish their eligibility for a break. If
you're paying your own way through Princeton, then you can afford to pay
your own way through NYLXS also. If you're getting a TAP grant to go to
state college (don't know if they still call it that), then you're
probably not going to have $40 to join NYLXS.
