I used the gif example on purpose. Deciding to use free-software requires knowledge of a complex net of issues.
I always thought it was funny that one of the easy strong points of gimp over photoshop (pre version 6.0) was managing the indexed colors for making web graphics, which end up being gifs if they are animated, or png's . as far as I know mng isn't happening yet. Unfortunate but true, the person using photoshop already, except for a few rare souls, doesn't really care enough about free-software ideals to forsake what he/she is so used to, and may have already spent hundreds of dollars on.
The gist of these demos would be to get people interested, by showing them what is possible, and also using the opportunity to educate them about the issues.
