SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Fair Use meeting with Congressman Weiner
|
Dear Amy:
My name is Ruben Safir, and I'm a member of a local group called NYers for Fairuse, http://www.nyfairuse.org. We've been active in the comunity in the education and discussion of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998. This act is being used as a wedge to close libraries, exasperate the digital divide, and inhibit education. It also stifles the computer business and puts us on the path to a 1984 Orweilian society. The American Acociation of Publishers, with the help of Pat Schoeder, is using the act to close public libraries.
When I spoke the Congressman Weiner in Brooklyn, he asked if we could help his staff become more informed on intellectual property issues, and we are glad to help in this. I would like to request a scheduled date to go down to DC and discuss this with the staff. In the future, the Congressman might come and speak to us on this issue in NY after this meeting. We can probibly get a large audience to come hear him speak on IP issues in NYC. Any time in January is fine but a Friday meeting would need to be early.
