Sounds like it might be a driver problem, though I am no expert. I had a problem a while back when I used Debian for a while where the fonts in X were all screwed up and I could not read any text. I tried finding information on fonts for a while until someone suggested that I check the driver.
The problem turned out to be that the driver for my card (ATI Rage 128) was not 100% free for some reason and I had to get it from the Debian non-free destribution. Once I used the correct driver, everything was fine.
