SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Introducing myself
|
Hello members of New York Linux Scene and the Hangout List, My name is Michael L Richardson. I am serving as co-Treasurer and Chair of the NYLXS JOURNAL. I am new at doing service in the Linux World. I would like to take a moment to say a little bit about myself. I found the Holy Grail (Linux) while looking for something better than what I was using (my first computer was a Gateway P-5 200 running Windows 95 which I had bought in Nov. 1996). Two (2) days after I set it up I got a virus [I really did not know that Window's loves viruses]. In January 1997 I could not boot the computer (error message said "Can not find FAT Tables". Wondering what FAT was doing in the Computer, I called tech support. They said reinstall Windows 95. That was the start of my fun and games with "EVEL KNIEVEL" (what I called my computer). In 1998 (after many reinstalls of Windows 95 among other problems) I found Red Hat 5.1. It promised not to crash and the price was right. I installed it. With Linux I have had to learn to do more than point and click with a prayer. I just installed Linux-Mandrake 8.1. I have been going to GNUbies, LXNY and NYLUG meetings (some I had no idea what was being discussed, some I still have no idea). I am currently 49 years old, single, no children that I know of. I currently work for the New York State Liquor Authority (in a non computer field). I realized that the only way for me to really learn about Linux and Open Source is to get more involved. NYLXS is a good place to do so.
