SUBJECT | Re: [hangout] Standing Commitees

You make a good point on this. The question of standing committees is two fold, as I see it. First we have a question if we want permanment charter mandated committes, and secondly, if we want those committies to have to be lead by the executive board.
I gut feelinmg is that the standing committeees created by the president, should be called adhoc committtees and they should not need to be lead by board memebers. Hopefully this opens the process and the participation. But the committees madated in the charter, permanent committees, should be board lead.
Again, based on the document you sited about the mission of NYLSX, I would say that we might have the following permanent committes by charter:
* Education - encouraging adoption of Free Software in the education system, providing support to educational institution AND eveloping course curriculuae (curriculums), scheduling of classes and teachers
* Lobbying - establishing and maintaining relationships with other groups having similar goals, disseminating information about where and when people can show up and add their voice, speaking up on the issues facing the Free Software community
* Journal - produce an NYLXS Journal and other informational materials
The resources committee I see as the primary responsibility of the actual oard, and the special activities a function of the adhoc commitees.
Does that make sense? What is your opinion?

In the draft of NYLXS constitution standing committees are mentioned but not enumerated. As the draft now stands, "The president may appoint standing committees as shall be required." (Art.IX,Section 1) Even though the president will appoint them we should have an idea of what committees the membership desire and would find useful. Using the NYLXS Starting Agenda (http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/appl/nylinux/mail/bysubject.html?idno=253) as a starting point, here is an initial list of committees and their goals that I offer for comments, ammendments, additions and deletions:
* Education - encouraging adoption of Free Software in the education system, providing support to educational institutions
* Training - developing course curriculuae (curriculums), scheduling of classes and teachers
* Lobbying - establishing and maintaining relationships with other groups having similar goals, disseminating information about where and when people can show up and add their voice, speaking up on the issues facing the Free Software community
* Resources - establish and maintain a lending library, provide resources to area LUGs, facilitate consultant and jobs network
* Special Activities - organize installfests, inservice and technical lectures etc.
* Journal - produce an NYLXS Journal and other informational materials
* Internal Technical - maintain and manage NYLXS' information technology, i.e. website and lab(when we get one)
* Acquisition - finding office space, getting equipment and other physical resources
Looking over it now, 8 seems to be a lot but there are many goals.
