I know it's from the Linux Advocacy HOWTO, but I think a lot applies to
advocacy in general (or can easily be translated for any advocacy
efforts). Specifically, I think the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th points
apply to this most recent thread as well as many others. I'm all for fair
use, all for free software and free speech (and wouldn't argue with free
beer), but we have to maintain some measure of civilized behavior.
Yes, there are trolls on this list; many have propagated from the NYLUG
list. There are those who disagree with some of what NYLXS stand for - I
suggest that intelligent (and civilized) disagreement is more constructive
than baseless rejection of ideas and personal insults going back and
forth.
Take criticism with a grain of salt - is there anything to be learned from
the points brought up against our own? Maybe there's some misinformation
that needs to be addressed, or a point that people haven't been educated
about. There are ways to do it and then there are ways to do it that make
us (NYLXS) look bad.
Don't fire back if your response is inflammatory. Cool down, discuss the
matter with like-minded individuals, see if you can construct a good
response. Otherwise it all just gives others the wrong image (and worse,
it fuels the trolls).
