TheLinuxSociety is free and open to all, and it will remain that way. It is currently a sub-group of NYPC which has meeting space in The New York Hotel at 34 Street and 8th Ave. NYPC "encourages" attendees to become paid members, but does not enforce this. TheLinuxSociety will only stay part of NYPC as long as they are allowed to continue with free attendance. Currently TheLinuxSociety holds one general meeting each month (various presentations related to Linux) and holds two study group meetings each month. The Study Group meetings are aimed at preparing for the LPI Linux Certification Exams. We've had some problems with attendance, partly due to a summer fall-off, partly due to a recent illness of the club's leader, Denny Nikolopoulos. The planning meeting of TheLinuxSociety went reasonably well. Denny is back up to speed, we raised some questions which we plan to take to the members, and we have some ideas for enhancing the group. There is finally access to a reliable server, the possibility of joining with DELUGE (another NYPC Linux SIG), and some thought of organizing entry-level classes. I was a little disappointed, because I personally feel TheLinuxSociety has not had enough follow-through from its leader and volunteers, and that was not really addressed. Tomorrow (Friday), the Study Group is going to cover "Documentation and Man Pages", but will also ask the attendees to participate in planning the future study group meetings. I can only hope.
- Ruth PS - We have a substantial number of OpenSource groups in this area. Too many to get to all of the meetings.
