Actually, I think this is not an incorrect analysis of one of the root
causes of the current recession. It's such a knee jerk reaction now to
think that the dot-com crash was all due to a gold rush mentality and bad
business plans. The reality, IMO, is that the dot-com crash and subsequent
economic downturn was secondary to the music and entertainment industry
destroying viable business practices through activities which are best
described as being worth of anti-trust action.
In fact, somewhere on my hard drive is an analysis by the Atlantic Monthly
looking at just this problem. And certain key congressmen are interest in
this legal avenue, especially Congressman John Conyer
(http://www.house.gov/judiciary_democrats/dmember.htm ), if my inside
information is correct.

Is it possible that the entire econmy has been going full bore because
of all this "theft"? How many computers where bought and used that
wouldn't
have if there was no possiblity of using the software for free.
(and then used the software to build companies to really gun the economy)
ex: how large is the mp3 player industry currently (or was it before the
death of napster for free?)
I am not sure that this is reality... It might be intresting to find out if
anybody has done an indepth analysis.
